Friday the Thirteenth!

Ok, here's my short story for today! I decided that since it was Friday the Thirteenth yesterday, I'd write a little piece about that. It's kind of rushed, but I liked the idea behind it, so I hope you all do, too!

Friday the Thirteenth
Taken from here
Lavorna had always loved Friday the Thirteenth. So many superstitious, frightened people to play with! She had found that it was much more fun messing with people on a day when they expected bad things to happen to them, rather than on a normal day. It was especially fun to mess with people who didn’t believe in bad luck.

It was early morning, and she was busy searching for the perfect candidate. She flew above the busy streets, invisible to the human eye, and scanned the crowds of people making their way to work. Her eyes paused on a man just coming out of his home, looking confident as he made his way to his car. A quick scan of his mind showed her that Tony didn’t believe in the ‘superstitious nonsense’ about Friday the Thirteenth: perfect! With a wicked grin, she followed him on his way to work.

When he had hit the motorway, she punctured one of his tyres with a click of her fingers; it had always been her style to start off small, and build up throughout the day. Tony cursed as his car shuddered, and pulled into a lay-by on the side of the motorway. She slowly descended and landed on the top of his car, folding her wings as she crossed her legs – it was going to be a long wait.

Tony got out of his car and moved to the side of the vehicle, inspecting the damage. He let out a groan when he saw the flat tyre, and took his phone out of his pocket. Lavorna clicked her fingers, and he cursed when he realised his phone had no signal. Hearing the stream of profanity from his mind, Lavorna chuckled to herself: she had chosen well.

After a couple of hours, and a lot of very unhelpful people (made more so by Lavorna’s relentless finger clicking), Tony finally had a new tyre, and carried on to work. His boss had seemed to be in a good mood when Tony spoke to him on the phone that he had borrowed, so he wasn’t too worried about arriving at work late. Spotting an opportunity, Lavorna clicked her fingers and vanished from the top of his car, instantly reappearing in his boss’s office. He was busy typing away on his computer, with a cup of coffee sitting in front of him. With a mischievous grin Lavorna brushed past the coffee, knocking the steaming liquid straight into the boss’s lap. He yelled in pain and stood up swiftly, sending his chair flying. When he looked back at his computer screen, he saw that he had accidentally deleted the document he was working on.

When Tony arrived at work 20 minutes later, he was met by a very angry boss, who informed him that he would be staying an extra two hours after work tonight, to make up for his lost morning. Lavorna giggled in the corner – humans were so easy to manipulate!

Tony sat at his computer and began work in silence, and Lavorna continued with her own work. After crashing the computer, blocking the toilet and somehow managing to trip over a flat surface, Tony was wishing he hadn’t bothered coming in to work today. Maybe there was some truth in the Friday the Thirteenth superstition, after all! On his lunch break, the ready meal Tony tried to cook in the microwave caught fire, triggering the sprinklers in the staffroom to go off. When he emerged, soaking wet and red faced, Tony was summoned to his boss’s office.

After finding out that the very important report that Tony had been working on for weeks had somehow disappeared from the system, his boss was furious. He had never seen someone go from being his number one candidate for promotion to being the joke of the office in one day before. There was only one thing to be done.

As Tony left the building, Lavorna clicked her fingers one last time and rain hammered down from the heavens. She clapped her hands with glee: she’d never gotten anyone fired before! How she loved Friday the Thirteenth!

  1. Lavorna is seriously evil Laura yet at the same time I really enjoyed this story, you have a real knack for writing something humorously macabre and that's very rare and indicative of a great writer. Love this post, you're good at writing short stories Laura, I'd love to read more if you write any others.

    1. Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and it's really nice of you to say that you think I'm a good writer! I was going for a kind of mischievous evil in Lavorna, but I think she came across as just pure evil! :)
