What's Up Wednesday

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow, and the idea is to let other bloggers know where you are with any writing and reading goals you may have.

1. What I'm reading

I'm still reading Sarah Dessen, this time Dreamland, since it's main theme is domestic violence, and that's the theme for one of my short stories that I'm writing for my dissertation. It's not one of my favourite novels by her, but I'm hoping it'll help me with my story.

2. What I'm writing

Camp NaNo has well and truly started, so I'm writing my dissertation. I've done 2152 words so far, and finished my first story out of 7, so it's going quite well.

3. What else I've been up to

I went shopping yesterday, and got quite a lot of stuff for my holiday to Spain on the 19th, which is quite exciting! I'd been looking forward to the shopping trip all weekend, and it didn't disappoint :)

4. What inspires me right now

Camp NaNo is certainly inspiring me a lot, and as usual, I'm being inspired by music. My holiday is also inspiring me, just knowing that I'll get a good long break after I've finished my first draft.

    I've only read two Dessen books so far, but I'd like to check out some of her older stuff. Dreamland was actually recommended to me recently.     I'm reading Sarah Dessen too atm, I am a massive fan of her books, but I'll admit Dreamland isn't one of my favorites either. Glad your dissertation is going well :)

    I read Dreamland in high school and it really opened my eyes to domestic violence. I adore anything by Sarah Dessen. Good luck with Camp Nano!

    Good luck with Camp NaNo and your dissertation! I hope you enjoy your trip to Spain! My parents went there on vacation when I was a kid and they loved it! I've never been, but it sounds like a great place to visit!

So I actually wrote this piece for April's WEP, but I was ill so didn't get to post it in the end. I'm quite glad, as it suits this month's theme so much more. The Insecure Writer's Support Group was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh as a place where writers can talk about their insecurities once a month, and receive encouragement and support from other writers. A is for Arachne and Arlee!

Before I get to my Greek Mythology part of this post, at the request of Alex J. Cavanaugh  (great idea by the way, Alex!), I'd first like to thank Arlee Bird for coming up with the challenge in the first place. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be taking part in this amazing experience every year. Thanks, Arlee! This is one of my favourite tales from Greek mythology, so naturally I chose it for my first letter. Arachne was the daughter of a shepherd, and was famous for the beautiful tapestries she weaved. Nymphs would travel from all over to see her work, and to watch her weave. One day, a nymph asked her if her talent was a gift from the goddess Athena. Arachne protested, saying her skill was all her own, and that her weaving was better than Athena's. Athena heard of this, and challenged the girl to a weaving contest.
