What's Up Wednesday

I just discovered What's Up Wednesday, and thought it would be a great weekly meme to participate in. It's hosted by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow, and the idea is to let other bloggers know where you are with any writing and reading goals you may have.

1. What I'm reading
I'm currently reading Looking for Alaska, by John Green. It's one of my favourite books but I haven't read it in years, so I thought I'd break it out again, and I'm loving it!
I'm also reading some Edgar Allan Poe on my kindle, as I think it'll make good research for my dissertation - I'm writing dark short stories, so it makes sense!

2. What I'm writing
This week I'm working on character profiles for my short stories. It's a lot of fun, since they are pretty twisted characters! It's interesting getting to know them; some of them are turning out very differently than I had first thought.

3. What else I've been up to
I've been working a lot, trying to save up for my holiday in a few weeks. My life at the minute pretty much consists of working 5 days a week and dissertation writing when I'm not at work. Needless to say, I'm ready for a holiday!

4. What inspires me right now
I'm very inspired by music at the minute - for the first time I've made playlists for my writing. Each of my seven short stories now has a playlist to go with it, which is fun. It's a good job I'm a fan of dark, depressing music, otherwise I'd probably need therapy!
My character profiles are also inspiring me, because all I want to do is write their stories.

  4. It's probably been over 10 years since I last wrote any character profiles. It's really an important thing to do when you're just getting to know new characters.

  5. So much joy and excitement can come from listening to music Laura, really glad to hear that you're getting motivation from somewhere. Character profiles are brilliant ideas in my opinion, a really good way for preparing for the main story.

  8. I loved Looking for Alaska. And Edgar Allan Poe, awesome! I love to create playlists for my WIP. Since my WIP takes place in the 80s, an interesting time in music :) Oh, thanks for mentioning character profiles. I think I might do that for this WIP to get a sense of the characters.
