Musing Mondays!

Time for another Musing Monday, this week’s question is:
Have you ever read a book after watching the movie/television version only to find that you don’t like the book as much as the adaptation?

Most of the time when I watch a book adaptation, I prefer the book. this is the case for Harry Potter (the films really do not do the books justice), Twilight (the films are absolute rubbish compared to the books, although I admit I went to see Breaking Dawn Part Two the other day and enjoyed it quite a lot) and The Hunger Games (I loved this movie, but the book is still better).

However, there is one exception: Lord of the Rings. It could be because I read the books after watching the movies. I absolutely love the Lord of the Rings movies, they’re some of my favourites, I’ve seen each of them at least 5 times. I asked for the books for Christmas one year, and was really excited to read them because I loved the movies so much, but I found them a bit hard to get through.

I think I’m going to give them another chance when I’ve finished my Masters, it might be easier a second time, and I really do love the movies.

In other news, I’m going on a mini-cruise to Bruges tomorrow, to visit the Christmas market! I’m very excited, and I’m hoping that it gets me in the mood for Christmas, because it’s taking me a long while to get in the mood this year! It doesn’t help that I haven’t even started Christmas shopping yet, but hopefully I’ll find some good stuff in Bruges. So, I won’t be around the Blogosphere for the next few days, but I’ll be back on Friday. I’m going to try and schedule a post for Thursday, but I’ve never done it before. Have a great week!

  2. This is exactly how I feel about Lord of the Rings Laura! The books are actually quite a chore to get through with the constant singing and stuff, a rare occasion where the film is better than the book, the Hobbit's a wonderful read if you've never read it before though, I'm shocked at how different the Hobbit was from the rest of the trilogy in all honesty! Great post Laura, I agree with Harry Potter too, the films do not do the books justice!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! I have read the Hobbit, and I think I did enjoy it more than the others, I need to try to re-read it before I see the movie. The Harry Potter movies used to really annoy me, but I understand now why they can't possibly be as good as the books! :)

  3. Enjoy your cruise!
I read Lord of the Rings before and still found the movies much better.
I read Dune after seeing the first movie, and while the movie was 'all right,' I really disliked the book.

    1. Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one, I really do love the movies. I've never read Dune, if I ever do I'll watch the movie first! :)

  4. The Lord of the Rings movies were really great! I haven't read the books yet because I have a hard time getting into fantasy books like that for some reason. Eventually, I may try to read them. Enjoy your cruise and shopping trip! Here is my Musing!

    1. Thanks! I love the movies, but the books are really hard to get into, and to get through! I'm going to try to re-read them eventually, to see if they're an easier read the second time around :)

  5. It often depends on which one I experience first. I loved Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, but not the movie. In contrast, I enjoyed the movie of A Wrinkle in Time more than the book. In both cases, I enjoyed the one I had experienced first.

    1. It's usually the case with me too, whichever I see/read first I enjoy more :)

  6. Have a great trip . . . . . I cheat I watch the movie instead of reading the book, I think this is a modern day sort of lazy thing to do, done by many

  7. I had that with Dune and Inkheart. Normally, it's the other way around though.

  9. Stopping by to thank you for signing up for my blogfest! Since it's my first one, I was worried no one would sign up. I guess we all have that concern though.

  11. I agree with you about The Lord of the Rings! I enjoy the books a lot and have read them a couple times, but I like the movies a bit more. :) I also prefer the movie adaptations to Chocolat, Sense and Sensibility (1995 version) and Little Women (1994 version). All great books, though, too!!

  12. I can see why you would think that about Lord of the Rings, but am going to defend them because I'm doing my dissertation on Tolkien! Actually also because I really love the books! i think the reason people prefer the film is that in the books there is just such a huuuge amount of travelling and description, which can get annoying sometimes. What about the Hobbit? Do you think you'll prefer the film? :)

Anyway, just wanted to let you know, i changed my blog name, you can find me over at thelittlenordiccabin.blogspot.com now :) (formerly inspire nordic)!

  13. Ohhhh... a mini cruise??? For fun! And I'm not nearly ready for Christmas...

  14. i definitely know what you mean about reading them quickly. i took a class this semester called Vikings and Valkyries in Contemporary Culture - basically nordic mythology etc and how it's portrayed in comics, manga, films, books and video games, and music actually. It was pretty cool but we had to read all three Lord of the Rings books within just three weeks!! So I was getting very frustrated when the hobbits insisted on sitting down AGAIN to do a few pages of eating/looking around/thinking about stuff! I mean come on, I have a deadline, you guys have an even worse deadline, ie evil taking over, there is no time for idle chit chat! :D
