Musing Mondays!

Musing Mondays is a weekly event held over at Should Be Reading, which I've decided to start participating in. (I'll be posting for the Express Yourself Meme on Thursdays now). The idea is, each Monday a question will be put up over there which we have to answer. This week's question is:

Do you read the ending before you start a book? Do you ever skip ahead to read the ending?

I used to do this when I was a teenager, but I would always find out something crucial that spoilt the book for me! I don't do it anymore for that reason; I want to be surprised when I get to the end of a book, I don't want to know what happens until it actually happens. I'm a fairly patient person, so unless it's a book I'm really excited about I don't feel the urge to skip to the end.
However, if I'm reading a book and I just can't get into it for whatever reason, I sometimes skip through just to find out if it's going to get any better, or even if it's worth finishing! Then if the ending looks good, I'll persevere and carry on reading.

How about you? Do you skip ahead, or would you rather wait?

  1. There is one reason why I go to the ending, once in awhile. However, I always check to see how many pages are in the book, but I never read the ending in doing so.

    1. That's a good reason for going to the end, it's nice to know how many pages there are in a book :)

  2. I like to read the last line, no idea why, just something I've always done. It can get me excited to know what's going to happen but because it's just the one line, it usually doesn't take anything away from the story :)

    1. I get that, it's one of the things I used to do, it's always interesting seeing what line they're going to end the story with :)

  3. I like to see how many pages are in the book...otherwise, no peeking!

  4. I think that the only time I've considered doing that is when I bought the Deathly Hallows although I don't think that I actually did give in to my temptation and read the whole book through, it just seems like it spoils the read as little as tempting as it must be to have a look at the ending for your own curiosity.

    1. I actually don't think I did that with Deathly Hallows, although I was certainly tempted! I was too busy actually reading it, I stayed up until 3am that day!

  5. I'll skip ahead if I'm not into it, just to see if it's worth finishing.

    1. I do that, you might as well if you're not going to finish it anyway :)

  7. I check for page count too. When I was younger I used to skip to the end more, but now I rarely find myself being tempted to do so. Although, after I do finish reading a book, I find myself flipping back and forth, rereading sections and comparing them. I've learned a lot about the specifics of storytelling that way. Emulating what I've learned, however, is another matter altogether.

    1. I did it a lot when I was younger, I think my patience is infinitely better now than it was then. I love reading a book and then going back and re-reading it, because often you find little bits of foreshadowing and things that you wouldn't have noticed otherwise. :)

  8. I never, ever do this. One of my friends does, and I was horrified when I found out! haha.

    sometimes...often...I take a little peek.
    I don't want to be spoiled...but I get anxious. ;-)

    1. Haha I can kind of understand that, sometimes if a book is really good I want to skip ahead just to see what happens, but most of the time I restrain myself :)

  10. Yeah, I don't like doing it either.

  11. I usually don't,but sometimes, if I'm getting totally frustrated because the MC just isn't going the way it should, I take a quick glance to make sure I'm not going to hate where the story's going. I very very rarely do this, though.

    1. I get that, that's the only time I'll do it, just to make sure finishing the book isn't a total waste of my time! :)

  12. I'm guilty of skipping ahead.

  13. I skip ahead particularly if I am reading a romance to make sure it has a happy ending. I haven't done so as much as I used to but it's always tempting.

    1. I used to do it all the time, but hardly ever do now, although it is still very tempting sometimes! I tend to read faster to get to the end instead :)

  14. Yes I like to know the ending, call me an old softy but I like a happy ending so if it is not then that's it in the bin it goes. I do the same with films. This is why my blog is always cheery and happy and everyone smiles a lot and is very nice to everyone else and nobody dies. . . . OK sometimes they do a bit or get eaten by the goat a bit or stabbed with pointy sticks a bit but it will all end happily . . . .maybe . . . . . sort of. . . . .AH

You are a busy soul, that is cool well done.....

    1. Ahh I love the endings to all of your blog posts, you always make them sound cheerful even if they're not particularly happy! And always entertaining :)

  15. I never do that. If it's not capturing me as I read I am not that interested in how it ends either. I simply abandon it!

    1. I tend to do this too, although I will skip forward a bit first. But usually, if a book isn't capturing me at the beginning then the end certainly won't do it!

  16. I consider reading the ending before reaching it close to a crime! Even if it is a torturous deal, I'll go through it all until I reach the ending. I like to do it in order. And I feel skipping to the end is being ungrateful to the writer in a way :P

    1. I agree, it totally ruins the story for me as well; you're reading the book to get to the ending, so where is the sense in reading it first?

  17. I check to see how many pages the book has, but I don't read the ending—unless I do it accidentally!

    1. Oh, I've done it by accident before, it's definitely possible!

  18. I'm actually one of those annoying people who won't even let others discuss a movie/series they're watching because I'm afraid they'll spoil the ending or a twist. Sometimes I even stick my fingers in my ears and go "LALALALLAlA" when people do it. Sometimes I throw tantrums and threaten bodily harm. I have issues.

Oh yeah...to answer your question - sure, I totally skip ahead to the ending when reading a book ;)

    1. Haha, I hate it when people ruin things for me, although I am sometimes guilty of looking up spoilers myself...although not very often! :)

  19. I don't do that often, but occassionally, I will read the end of the book. I did that with the Twilight series. I read book 1, then I got the last book and read the end. I guess I was impatient to find out what happened.

  20. I couldnt do that. I have to read it from the beginning, and if anyone tells me the end, then its ruined it in my eyes haha
