What's Up Wednesday

What’s Up Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Erin L Funk and Jaime Morrow, and the idea is to let other bloggers know where you are with any writing and reading goals you may have.


1. What I'm reading
I'm on a Sarah Dessen kick at the moment, re-reading some of my favourites. I finished Last Chance on Monday night, and now I'm reading Just Listen.

2. What I'm writing
I've finished the character profiles for my dissertation, so now I'm working on the story outlines. I start writing the stories on Monday for Camp NaNo, so I need the outlines done by then. It shouldn't be too much trouble. 

3. What else I've been up to
Still mostly working and working on my dissertation. I've also been getting a lot of reading done, which is nice. There's nothing better than curling up with a good book!

4. What inspires me right now
Probably the books that I'm reading at the minute. I've been going back and reading old favourites, which I sometimes like more than starting a new book. It's nice to go back into the world of familiar characters.

    You know, I've only reread a couple books in my lifetime. And mainly to remind myself of the story before seeing the movie. (Like LOTR.)

    Best of luck with the start of NaNo on Monday, it's hard to believe it will be July already! Sounds like you've got a great start with the profiles done and the outlines nearly there. :)

    The closest I've gotten to reading Sarah Dessen is watching the movie How To Deal which was based on That Summer and Someone like You.

    I love reading old bks too. It's nice to fall in love with old characters again.

    I just read a SD last week-- Someone Like You. I loved it! I've read a handful of her work and have never been disappointed. She's great. Happy writing week!

    Hmm. Wonder if I should use CampNaNo as the impetus to get through my second draft of Champion in Flight. I've been a bit slow on my revisions.

    I just read The Moon and More. It's not my favorite Sarah Dessen, but was still good. Maybe I should follow your lead and re-read some of her other books.

    I'm a big Sarah Dessen fan. Have you read her new one? I haven't gotten it from the library yet (on a book-buying ban at the moment).

    Dessen seems to be all the rage this week. Several other folks I've visited are reading her too. She's also just awesome, so it's no wonder.

So I actually wrote this piece for April's WEP, but I was ill so didn't get to post it in the end. I'm quite glad, as it suits this month's theme so much more. The Insecure Writer's Support Group was created by Alex J. Cavanaugh as a place where writers can talk about their insecurities once a month, and receive encouragement and support from other writers. It's such an amazing group, it even has its own website now, which you can visit here . This week I'm a co-host! There were three short stories I wanted to get written, and I also wanted to get back to my NaNo edits, but none of that happened. A is for Arachne and Arlee!

Before I get to my Greek Mythology part of this post, at the request of Alex J. Cavanaugh  (great idea by the way, Alex!), I'd first like to thank Arlee Bird for coming up with the challenge in the first place. If it wasn't for him, we wouldn't be taking part in this amazing experience every year. Thanks, Arlee! This is one of my favourite tales from Greek mythology, so naturally I chose it for my first letter. Arachne was the daughter of a shepherd, and was famous for the beautiful tapestries she weaved. Nymphs would travel from all over to see her work, and to watch her weave. One day, a nymph asked her if her talent was a gift from the goddess Athena. Arachne protested, saying her skill was all her own, and that her weaving was better than Athena's. Athena heard of this, and challenged the girl to a weaving contest.
