Decorating and Dunelm Mill

For the past couple of weeks, my mum and I have been decorating my bedroom. Taking wallpaper off must be one of the hardest, most boring parts of decorating. The stuff just does not want to come off the wall! You think you've got a nice big bit that'll tear a huge strip off the wall, but it just peels away the tiniest little bit! And we can't start to wallpaper until the old wallpaper is taken down. *sigh*

Also we've just realised that the wallpaper that we bought last year (we've been meaning to decorate my bedroom for a very long time) is actually not going to be enough to cover all of the walls, and they've stopped making it! But we've decided to do one wall just plain purple, which should look really nice because the other wallpaper is cream with purple flowers on it. Yesterday we went from shop to shop looking for some nice plain purple wallpaper, only to come home and find some on the internet!
We also went to Dunelm Mill yesterday, which was exciting because it's only just opened up in our town, before we had to travel for 45 minutes to get to the nearest one. We found some nice bits for my sister's bedroom, which is finished now, and also a couple of nice things for mine once it's done. They also had some gorgeous bedspreads, but we're going to go back for those once we get paid!
For my sister's room, we got a red beanbag chair, a red lamp, a red candle holder, a black 'dream' to put on the wall, and a little cushion for her bed.
For my room we bought a jewellery holder, because I've wanted one for ages, and a little lantern-type candle holder. The stuff was so nice in there, I think we'll definitely be going back!

I cannot for the life of me make those pictures go where I want them to, so they'll have to stay put! So far, my schedule is pretty successful :)

  2. My room has only been redecorated once. However my parents decided to redecorate it to surprise me when I was away for two weeks. So I didn't have to deal with any of the wallpaper. From what my parents said, wallpaper is extremely hard to get off.

I also have trouble getting pictures to show up where I want them. So after trying for awhile, I just give up.

I am glad to here your schedule is working out for you!

    1. Thanks! Aww that's nice what your parents did :) That's what we've done for my sister while she's away at university.
Silly pictures, I just gave up trying in the end!

  6. Before our huge decorating spree years ago, every room in our house was covered in woodchip wallpaper. It was thee hardest thing ever to get off! I swear it's harder than ordinary wallpaper.

I can really sense your excitement in redecorating! Enjoy it because I love it, love buying we nic-nacs for rooms!

    1. That sounds awful! It's bad enough getting normal wallpaper off.
I am really excited, I can't wait until it's done! I keep seeing purple things and thinking "that'll look really nice!" I can tell that when it's done it's going to look like a purple explosion :P

  8. I do like Moroccan lanterns and we have loads of them. in fact in the old house which was very very old they were all over the place. But now we were in a classic 1970's bungalow finding homes for them all is proving slightly tricky. Still we have only been here six months so are still squeezing all our stuff into it.

Wallpaper is fickle sometimes it will all come of dead easy and them sometimes it does not, and you do as you are doing which is hard work. One option to remember for the future is hire a steamer for a day they can work wonders.

Hope it all turns out as you want.

    1. Thanks, I hope so too! Yeah I've heard of steamers, I bet that would make it easier. I'll have to try it for next time! :)

  9. I wonder which is harder: taking the wallpaper off or putting the new on. Purple is an excellent choice, though. :)

    1. It's my favourite colour, so I can't wait to see what it looks like when it's finished :) We did my sister's room last week and actually found putting the wallpaper up easier than we thought :)

  10. I'm hoping to decorate my room soon too! We need alot of work done on the house due to water leaking through the roof and it has completely ruined two walls in my room so hopefully when its done I can finally have it like I want - light pink and in shabby chic style! I have a white lantern exactly like that, a jewellery holder similar to that but its a masquerade mask and I have so many cushions with love on I've lost count! Your room sounds like it'll be lovely when its finished! Go to ikea if possible and buy some lovely vases with colourful fake flowers in, they're so pretty! :)

  12. Our first house was so terribly "fixed"...there were about 3 layers of wallpaper that had been put up over several decades, and then someone just painted over it all. Ha! We thought about fixing it - and really, we should have - but in the end we just decided to move. I think your room sounds like it will be pretty!

    1. I don't blame you for deciding to move, it sounds like it would have been really hard to sort it all out! Thanks, I'm really looking forward to getting it finished :)

  13. I love redecorating! My fiancé and I have just bought my mum's house and I went shopping today. Got an old wood-carved coffee table, a clock, two kitchen hangings and two cushions. All very old-school French-looking. It's very excited.

I'm jealous you have wall paper though, because it's very hard to find where I live unless I go online. And my fifi would SO not be up to helping me cover the walls :S

    1. Ooh that all sounds lovely! This is my first experience of re-decorating, and I'm enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would! I can't wait until it's done, so I can go shopping for some more knick-knacks to go in it! :)

  16. Oh my goodness, just get me over! I LOVE peeling wallpaper! Just bring me snacks every so often and I'll happily sit there and peel it off for you. I peel everything, it's a really weird habit. I peel all the labels off of the bottles I'm drinking from, stickers off of books, anything peelable gets peeled. YES.

You room sounds like it's going to look amazing! I think that having one wall of patterned wall paper looks really pretty. My boyfriend has that in a lot of his house and it looks really good! And cream and purple are a pretty combination :D You have to put up pictures when it's done!

    1. I'll definitely be putting up pictures, just got to make it look beautiful first!
I like it when a huge strip comes off all at once, I sat there for hours the other day peeling away. It's kind of hypnotic! :)
