Loan, Old Friends and Old Writing!

I found out yesterday that my application for a Career Development Loan for my Masters was successful, yay! I'm so relieved, I would have had to drop out of the course if it failed, and I'm enjoying it so much. This means that my course fees are covered, and I'll also have a little extra for living expenses, which means I can work less and write more! This is really good, because I've been working so much lately it's been hard to find time to write, so hopefully I can rectify that now. I'm really motivated because of the good news, so I'm going to work twice as hard.

I also found out on Wednesday that a new Creative Writing Society has been started at uni, so I'm definitely going to join that. There's a meeting next Wednesday, so I'm really looking forward to that, it should be a lot of fun. It'll be nice to know people outside the blogosphere that I can talk to about my writing (although you guys really are awesome!)

I get 5 days off work from Sunday onwards, so that'll give me lots of time to write. I'm seeing my old uni friends on Saturday night, and I really can't wait, I really don't see them enough. I'll be tired from work, but it's worth it to see them all.

I just found some writing that I did a couple of years ago, for the Creative Writing module during my English Literature degree, and I'm surprised to find that it was actually pretty good! I've been struggling for ideas for one of my assignments, which is a portfolio where I have to include two different genres of writing. I'd already decided on fiction for one of them (probably a short story, or maybe the beginning of a novel) but I didn't really know what to do for the second genre. Do I choose poetry, which I'm lousy at and have little experience in, or do I choose to write a play, which I also have no experience in?

Well one of the pieces that I did for this module a couple of years ago was a scene from a play, and it was really good (or I think it is, anyway) so that's helped me to make the decision to go with writing a play. Very helpful! I've been looking through the different pieces, and they're giving me a lot of inspiration! I might put a couple of them up here, to see what you guys think of them. It's weird, because while reading them I was thinking "Did I really write this?" I'd always thought that the stuff I wrote back then was terrible, but it just goes to show that going back isn't always a bad thing.

  1. I'm glad your loan came through! I also think plays are great fun, though I've only acted in them. I've never written one, but it sounds exciting. Best of luck!

  4. That's actually good news! Yay for you!

I can so relate to what you wrote about your old work. Sometimes I stumble upon something I wrote a long time ago, and I'm always surprised at how well it's written, while at the time of writing I thought it sucked. Not that I don't think there is room for improvement and not that I'll be every entirely, 100% happy with what I write, but it's good to know I can pull it off, writing :)
