Express Yourself Meme!

First of all, sorry for not posting yesterday, or Saturday for that matter! I think I'm going to give up posting on Saturdays, that always seems to be the post I miss, since I work all weekend. Yesterday I was just super busy all day, and didn't get around to posting, so I'm posting today instead.
Dani at Entertaining Interests and Jackie at Bouquet of Books have started up a weekly meme together, and it seems like fun so I'm signing up! It involves writing about a different topic every week (the topic list can be found on both Dani and Jackie's blogs) to help bloggers get to know each other.

This week's topic is: Pick a name in your current wip; what was your process of acquiring it?

Most of the name's in my Camp NaNo novel were chosen from a name generator; I basically chose the names I most liked the sound of, or that suited the story the most.
My main character's name, however, was chosen because I really like the name Alex and all of its variations; Alexis, Alexandra, Alexa, and finally the name I chose for my main character, Alexia. I chose this variation because it sounds the most unusual to me, and I wanted a name that wasn't used a lot.

  1. I love the name Laura, name generators are an awesome way of generating character names, I might end up doing that for a book I plan on writing, great post as usual, don't worry about not posting on Saturdays either, I'm exactly the same because of how busy I am that day.

    1. Thanks! It's easier to use a name generator, otherwise I'm sat for hours trying to think of them! I also like to use baby name websites :)

  2. Thanks so much for joining!

I'm partial to the name Alex. My 12 yr old daughter is an Alexis and we call her Alex!

It's a great name, it'll definitely be in the running if I ever have a girl, and if I don't maybe I'll use the male version! :)

  3. Names for characters...I've utilised the baby books I collected when pregnant many years ago! Like you though, I go with what I like the sound of, though sometimes I can agonise for ages over a name only to decide it just doesn't fit!

    1. I'm glad I'm not the only one! If I'm writing flash fiction I tend to leave my characters nameless, mainly because it's easier that way! :)

  4. I just finished the first draft of my WIP Sunday night. I have a character named Dezmond. I started writing this during NaNo last year, and I needed a name, and at just that moment, I got an email from Dezmond over at Hollywood Spy. Never changed it.

    1. I sometimes do that too, I've been known to go on facebook and scroll through all of my friends' names until I find one that suits! :)

  5. I work as a call analyst and I've generated a lot of my character's names by combining the name's of reps I like. Since there are thousands of reps, I'm usually never at a shortage of ideas. I always find female names to be a lot more interesting than male's, though. I just feel like there's a wider variety of female names. Alexia's a pretty cool name for a main character. My favorite names in the piece I'm writing are Manar Christoff, Fain Alp, and Enovia Harper (all female names).

    1. Ooh I like Enovia, that's lovely. You're right, I tend to enjoy naming my female characters more than males, because there really is so much more choice!

  6. I've always been draw to Alex and Amy names. I don't know why. I like that you used a name generator..I've considered buying baby name books because I loathe picking character names.

    1. I use baby name websites, they're very useful! Although sometimes it can take a long while before finding the perfect fit.

  7. I try to use names from history if I can and if possible link the name to a similar event in my diary. Although I do include a lot of people who really do exist and do the things I write about. I hope that makes some sense.

    1. That sounds like a really good idea - I love historical names, they usually sound more elegant.

  9. That's a pretty name. I often just grab names I like the sound of too, especially for side characters.

  10. I wanted unusual, too! So that's how Kaleah came to be. As for Alexia, I *love* that name:) I have a Alexander, whom i shortened to Alex in a WIP. I generally work on 3 stories at the same time because ideas get bounced off each other as I write:)
New follower saying hi, nive to meet ya:) *waving*
