H is for...Happy Endings!

I've already done posts on original versions of fairy tales which have not-so-happy endings, so here's my post on happy endings! (So there'll probably be a lot of Disney mentions!)

As you know because of my previous posts, many original versions of fairy tales don't have happy endings - many of today's retellings do because they are much more focused towards children now. Many fairy tales end with the line "and they lived happily ever after", and this implies that after the narrative stops, the characters in the fairy tale will be happy and have perfect lives.

Although I love the original versions, I do like the "happily ever after" versions because of their happy endings, because I like to imagine myself as a character in the tale! I can pretend that I live in a castle with a pet dragon and my very own prince charming! Also, the magic would be pretty good! It just seems like it would be the perfect life - there's a reason people use 'fairy tale' as a description sometimes! (Fairy tale wedding)

Happy endings in fairy tales tend to mean happy endings for the main characters in the tale, and bad endings for the villains: in Jack and the Beanstalk, he and his mother "live happily ever after" with the giant's money, while the giant does not live happily ever after, because Jack caused his death.
A lot of happy endings involve the main character (a damsel in distress) meeting her prince charming. This happens in Cinderella, Snow White, and The Little Mermaid to name a few. However in other fairy tales, the happy ending is monetary gain, such as in Jack and the Beanstalk, or just the main characters surviving, such as in Little Red Riding Hood.
Thanks for reading, and I hope you all live happily ever after! :)

  1. Such a positive post! I wish life was always like this. We know it's not, but for one brief shining moment, I smiled.

  3. I love a good romantic movie (whether fairy tale or not) with a happy ending. It always leaves me with such a swoony feeling.

P.S. Disney films are the best!

  4. I'm sure Walt Disney insisted all his films had happy endings while he was alive

  6. Lovely little post! I love happy endings no matter how cheesy they are. You just get a nice warm little gooey feeling after watching/reading a good happy ending :)

    1. Yeah, that's why I like them! I also like non-happy endings, or bittersweet endings, because they make me think. But it depends what mood I'm in :)

  7. I love happy endings, and I was such a big fan of the Disney princess movies as a kid. But I have to admit that the "happy endings" sometimes seem a little suspect to me, and I love the Grimm's version with its creepiness a lot too. Great post.

  9. There's nothing like a happy ending! It's a shame some parts of life couldn't have more of a 'Disney film' ending :-)

  10. No one ever lives happily ever after in real life, thus I suspect that is why fairy tales are ever popular. While everyone likes a 'happy ending' (no jokes here), I do like the other endings you blogged about previously.

    1. Me too, sometimes you just need to watch or read something where there's a happy ending! :)

  12. It would be great to live in a castle, but I imagine it'd be a bit draughty. The heating bill would be massive.

    1. This is true, although if you lived in a castle I guess you could afford the heating bill! There'd also probably be loads of fireplaces, so you'd just have to pay for logs or coal, and try not to set anything on fire! :)
