Secondary Characters Bloghop

It's time for the Secondary Characters Bloghop, hosted by Theresa Paolo, Jessica Salyer, Jenny Morris, Suzi Retzlaff, and Kelley Lynn

Sometimes secondary characters steal the show, (or the book) and become our favorites. On May 22nd we want you to tell us about your favorite secondary characters from books or movies, or both!
Whether it's the funny best friend or that goofy kid next door,
we want to know what secondary characters
you just couldn't get enough of and why.

As soon as I heard about this bloghop, I knew exactly who I would include.

First of all, from the Lord of the Rings series, I've always thought Samwise Gamgee didn't get enough credit. If it wasn't for him, the ring probably would never have been destroyed. Frodo himself said that he wouldn't have gotten very far without Sam, and it's true. Sam really should have got all of the glory! Of course, you have to remember that he didn't have to bear the burden of the Ring :)

Next, a couple from the Harry Potter series. I always loved Neville and Luna; they really came into their own when they joined the DA in Order of the Phoenix. I love how they were the only members of the order to reply to Hermione's message in Half Blood Prince. I also love how they weren't typical heroes; they were brave, and they fought knowing that it could end with their deaths. Like with Sam, Harry wouldn't have succeeded without the help of these two.

Obviously, Ron and Hermione were also very important in the series, but that really goes without saying. And there are a whole lot of other awesome secondary characters in Harry Potter, but my post would be too long if I listed them all.

  1. I'm with you on Neville and Luna Laura, such good secondary characters, J.K. Rowling did an amazing job with Harry Potter in that she built up an amazingly interesting ensemble, even the Irish bloke Seamus go interesting during the Goblet of Fire and he wasn't somebody I considered important enough to have a role.

  2. Samwise and Neville are similar in that they are true heroes. They could easily have turned back, but they were willing to sacrifice themselves in the service of their friend. They weren't in it for the glory. They were their for their friend.

  3. Sam was pretty awesome. If it wasn't for him I think Frodo would have thrown himself into a pit before he made it where he needed to be. lol.
    Yay for Luna!

  4. I've loved Neville from the very beginning. I well up every time when Dumbledore awards him ten points at the end of The Philosophers Stone for standing up to his friends. By the time he was wielding a sword at the end he was definitley my favourite hero. He wasn't expected to give all that he did, but he did it anyway. Go Neville!

  5. It is funny how sometimes we connect with the secondary character more than the main character. I agree with you about Sam; he pulled at my heartstrings more than Frodo.

  6. I really liked Luna as well. She was quirky and funny.

  7. Sam was a fabulous pick. What an amazing character he is and where would that story be (and Frodo) without him? Everyone needs a friend like Sam!

  8. That's true about Sam. Every character was vital, but Sam was so loyal. So sweet. How could you not love him?

  9. That is almost exactly what I said about Sam after finishing Lord of the Rings! Man, he's a hero! Totally doesn't get enough credit. :)

  10. Go Sam, Luna, and Neville!!! Without them, the heroes would never have saved the day.

    Great post!

  13. Sam not only kept Frodo going when he would have given up a thousand times over but also took on and defeated Shelob- effing Shelob!!!- all by himself and won. BAD ASS!

Neville stepped up to Voldemort with the courage explifying a true Gryffindor and then destroyed Nagini, again, all by himself. I repeat myself here but it's no less true: BAD ASS!

And Luna is a warrior godess- kicking butt in almost every major battle they had with the deatheaters. I don't need to say it again.

    Awesome choices!

  17. You're right. Sam was perfect. Actually, Tolkien was so brilliant, any of his characters could have been listed here.

  18. Oh yes for Sam!!! Does Gandalf count as a secondary character? He's one of my ALL TIME favorite characters, and Dumbledore reminded me of him in some ways, loved Dumbledore too
