Leaving: Flash Fiction Challenge!

I found a new blog the other day called Flash FictionFlourish, where flash fiction challenges are set. It’s a great idea, and means that I can practise my flash fiction, and I tend to do this more when a challenge is set by other people! I also enjoy working with prompts.

I know I don’t usually post on Wednesdays, but I wanted to take part in this challenge, and this can also make up for me missing my Saturday post! This week, the challenge is to write 100-150 words about the following picture with the prompt ‘Leaving’, so here’s my attempt!

Prompt: Leaving

Lucy stood on the deck, watching the buildings get smaller and smaller until they looked like doll houses. Soon they would be so far away that she wouldn’t be able to see them at all, but she kept looking, knowing it would be a long time before she saw them again.

She could feel the fear settling in her stomach, gnawing at her insides. This was the most frightening thing she’d ever decided to do, and she’d had a lot of doubts about it.

Despite her fears, Lucy could also feel the beginnings of excitement. She’d been worrying about leaving for months, and now that she had gone, she felt a huge sense of relief.

The buildings were gone, lost in the horizon, but Lucy wasn’t sad anymore. She was ready to embrace her future with open arms: her life was about to begin.

  1. Some day I want to experience this so much Laura, to experience leaving this place behind and just watching it fade away, on Sunday when I was on that boat out on the deck it was all I could think of. This post has really pulled on my heartstrings, love it, I'm jealous of Lucy, brilliant piece of writing.

    1. Thank you! I know exactly what you mean, I think I'm kind of jealous of her, too! I love it where I live, but at the same time there aren't many career opportunities.

  3. I like this. Now I'm wondering where Lucy is going.

Now time for me to head on over to the Flash Fiction Flourish to see what's going on (sometimes I feel like I just follow you around the internet).

  5. Captain Clarks ferry was leaving port as it did every Thursday, when it abruptly came to halt several hundred metres from the shore. There was then silence the engine stopped and the sea calm.

The crew looked confused, the passengers a little worried;, as Captain Clark looked behind him, back towards the shore he noticed movement, small at first then it grew for a while it looked like the ships own wake. But soon it was clear a huge sea monster was about to strike the side of the boat.

Captain Clack and the crew quickly and efficiently got the passengers to the life boats, but it was too late, Captain Clark, the crew, the passengers and the ferry were never seen again

    The End
