I is for...Inspiration!

Today's post is about things that have been inspired by fairy tales!

One of my favourite fairy tale inspirations is Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes collection. They are a group of 6 poems based on fairy tales, but the events that unfold are certainly not the same as in the original versions, or the Disney versions. They are also very violent, which is probably one of the reasons why I like them so much!

In his version of Cinderella, the ugly stepsister swaps her shoe with the one left at the ball by Cinderella, and when the prince finds out who the shoe fits, he decides that instead of marrying her, he'll cut off her head! He then proceeds to do the same to the second stepsister and attempts to do the same to Cinderella, but she wishes to be married to a decent man instead of the prince, and the fairy godmother grants her wish and marries her to a jam maker. Anyone who knows the original version (doesn't everyone?) will know that the prince isn't this violent!
In his version of Jack and the Beanstalk, Jack's mother sends him to the top to get the golden leaves that grow there, but the giant threatens to eat him so he climbs down empty handed. Jack's mother then climbs up herself, and is eaten. Jack bathes and then climbs up again, and he was able to collect some leaves this time because the giant couldn't smell him. So the story ends with Jack being rich, and resolving to bathe daily! I thought this version was pretty funny!
I love his version of Little Red Riding Hood, because when she encounters the wolf at the end of the story, she pulls a gun out of her knickers and shoots him, and procuring a new wolf skin coat!

These are my favourites of the collection, they always make me laugh when I read them.
There are also a lot of films that are inspired by fairy tales, obviously including all of the Disney ones! Fairy tale movies are pretty popular this year, there are a lot of them coming out in cinemas. For example, Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror. I can't really comment on them, because I haven't seen them, but I had to mention them because they are obviously inspired by fairy tales! There's also Shrek, which I love because it brings a lot of fairy tales together and merges them into one, to create an awesome fairy tale land!
There's also a new series on TV called Once Upon a Time, which looks like it might be pretty good. I've only seen part of one episode, but I'm going to try to watch it from the beginning.
